Sabine adored a good party.

The Reverie was a grand affair and one of the few attractions she had never been able to weasel her way into. Mostly because during the Reverie, the queen’s palace was enchanted not to let anyone through the door who didn’t have one of the magic invitations. Now, as she walked up the golden marble staircase that led to the grand entrance, the satin hem of her black jumpsuit a smidge too long and shuffling against the ground, she felt an intense wave of satisfaction when the magic barrier let her through rather than zapping her as it had in the past.

The last several days with Lyra and Amina had been spent going over their plans for tonight in the kind of excruciating detail that gave Sabine a migraine. She was built more for execution than strategizing. Lyra and Amina, however, had pored over stolen blueprints of the palace in order to commit the layout to their memories.

Sabine searched for Amina inside the ballroom. It didn’t take very long to spot her friend’s stunning silhouette leaning against one of the marble pillars that stretched all the way to the impossibly high, gold-painted ceilings. The ballroom was decorated with intricate tapestries that depicted different parts of the Valkyries’ history and were the only bit of color in the room that broke up the white marble and gold details the Valkyrie queen tended to favor. Which was exactly why almost every building in Valor looked exactly the same. Opulent and boring.

A little blood would be such a great addition to the decor, she thought to herself.

Someone on Sabine’s right jostled her, trying to pass through the thickening crowd.

“I’m so sorry,” a server with a mask in the shape of a fox said as he steadied the tray of drinks precariously balanced in one of his hands before fixing his face covering back into its proper place.

Sabine adjusted her own mask—an expensive piece made of feathers that Lyra had let her borrow—as she grabbed a flute of ambrosia off the platter.

“No worries,” she told him as she drained the entire flute in one gulp, returning the empty glassware back to the tray and then strutting off in Amina’s direction. Lyra was nowhere to be seen, as planned.

“You should be careful with the ambrosia,” a feminine voice warned to her left. “It’s potent.”

Meli. Fantastic. Sabine would run into the one person who not only could recognize her but had a penchant for not knowing when to shut up about things Sabine would rather be kept quiet.

“And yet, it’s still not strong enough to make me block out the grating sound of your voice,” Sabine quipped back as she turned to meet Meli’s wine-colored eyes.

“Oh, Sabine, your mouth is as sharp as ever, I see.” Meli propped a gloved hand on her hip.

“Not as sharp as my daggers,” Sabine retorted.

“How in the Gods’ names did you get in here? These parties are really starting to go downhill.” Meli clicked her tongue in disappointment.
